The Mecca of winter sports! Best skiing, mountaineering, alpine touring and anything else from easy to extreme! Don't ski during snowstorms. The visibility is too low because there is no trees high up the mountains. Very low visibility. Great town,gets lately a little too expensive though same with ski passes. OMG! This granddaddy of French winter resorts on the Swiss/Italian border has enough ski terrain to keep you busy for weeks. The lifts are high and downright scary, topping out on high ridges way above the glaciers. The five independent ski areas make it too big to do the whole place in a week. The ski schools are excellent although a bit expensive for one on one. But well worth it. Apres ski is excellent especially chambre nueuf bar. Food is expensive but very nice. There are some great restuarants available.... Moreintermediate skier

First going to Chamonix is going inside the mountains. Chamonix is not a ski resort, it's door to mountain. That is the reason why it is not the best family and beginner resort. Elevation is high, up to 12500 feet and conditions can change quickly. But if it is a good day it could be one of the best in your life !... Moreadvanced skier

In 2014/5 my family hired a chalet at Les Houches in the Chamonix valley for four months. While it was a very poor season by local standards, it was better than any season w have experienced in Australia & had real powder. Incredible resort, lives up to the reputation. Any passionate skier should have it on their bucket list. Incredible terrain. Large town that was there before the ski lifts so there is a lot of character and plenty to do.
