Pros
  • Large ski resort with a variety of trails for all abilities
  • Nearby city offers plenty of amenities, restaurants, and shopping
  • Central location in Hokkaido means snow quality is often better than Niseko
Cons
  • Not much luxury accommodation

Overall

4.6

Light and dry Central Hokkaido powder is what skiers and snowboarders come to Furano for. In fact, the snow here is often better than at the more well-known Niseko (and without the crowds of foreign visitors too). While there are some westerners on the slopes, Furano makes for a much more authentic Japanese experience.

Great ski area although some ravines eat up some of the available ski terrain within the resort. We were mostly here for the offpiste skiing and honestly didn't sample much of the "onpiste" offerings, which I wish there were more of. Being a North America skier I was a bit annoyed at the amount of terrain that would typically be avalanche... More

Located on Hokkaido, Japan, this resort enjoys spectacular quality snow. Access to town is good, although additional lift access between the Kitanomine side and the Furano side would be beneficial.... More

While most of the people tend to go to Niseko, I prefer Furano. A lot less people. Amazing possibilites for intermediate/experts and a more authentic feel (not so many foreign tourists)! Even in high season, the queues aren't long and surprisingly, accomodation, bars, food etc. is not overly expensive. highly recommended!... More

I'm not sure the ski area is large enough to warrant a week vacation, but it is a very nice, low-hassle ski area. The area near the base of the ski area is a nice place to stay. I liked that it was easy to walk around the town and to the ski area. Note that when I say "town", I'm referring to the village-like area near the ski area, not the town... More

A great resort without the volume of visitors that Niseko or Nagano has. Absolutely amazing, wold class champagne powder for days bring endless smiles in a very friendly atmosphere. The facilities and accomodation is excellent, being modern and great value. Location of hotels and resorts to the lifts is also great. I really enjoyed my time at... More

Furano is a really nicer resort for every skill level, but like everything in Japan, it starts to shine with a lot of powder. The treeskiing is amazing and the terrain in general is really good.... More

Never been to Hakuba, But spent a month between Furano and Niseko. Furano is utterly amazing. Little to no lift queues, fresh tracks everyday and just so, SO much powder. And off-piste is some of the best i've had!! It is an authentic small Japanese town experience. It is not a party town like niseko. Hardly anyone speaks english where as Niseko... More
